Center Valley, PA (October 11, 2006) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team returned to action on Wednesday afternoon hosting Arcadia University, settling for a 2-2 tie in double overtime in a non-conference game.
Arcadia (5-2-5 overall) held a 27-9 advantage on shots and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks in the game. Junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) made seven saves for the Bulldogs (8-3-2 overall), while his counterpart Jeff Kratohwill stopped two DSU shots.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead 6:04 into the game when Geoff Buckingham knocked home a corner kick feed from Matt Abate. DSU wasted no time tying the contest when senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) set another milestone with an assist on the tying goal scored off the foot of sophomore German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) at the 8:05 mark. Sturm recorded his 22nd career assist to the all-time mark when he received a pass, beat three AU defenders and found a wide open Reyes in front of the net.
The score remained tied until 37:37 when Sturm and Reyes connected once again. This time Reyes hit a free kick into the box where Sturm leaped high into the air to head the ball into the upper left corner to make it a 2-1 game. The goal was Sturm’s 22nd and gives him 51 points on the season. Reyes now has 10 assists on the year, which is one shy of tying the single season record.
The lead lasted until halftime but not much past the mid-way point as the Knights struck quickly in the second half to tie the score at two. Matt Benner sent a long pass thru the Bulldog defense where Chris Brunetti dribble a few times and just beat the DSU keeper to the upper left. Riedmiller got a hand on the uncontested shot, but it was not enough as the ball deflected slowly into the net.
Both team’s had some chances to record the winning goal throughout the second half and overtime periods but none were converted. The best opportunity came off the foot of AU’s Abate midway thru the second half when his free kick from about 30 yards out hit the far right post and caromed back into play.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, October 14th when they travel to Wilkes University for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 2:30 pm.
