Center Valley, PA (October 4, 2006) – Senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) scored two more goals and added an assist to set a new single-season record in both goals scored (21) and points (48) in the DeSales University Men’s Soccer team 5-1 win over Baptist Bible College on Wednesday afternoon.
Sturm passes both Chris Turner and Tim Riggs who each scored 20 goals in consecutive seasons (1987 and 1988) and Turner who had held the points record with 46 in 1987. Sturm now has 21 goals and six assists for 48 points and is within just nine points of tying Riggs for the all-time points lead of 132.
Sturm started the scoring at 26:55 when he headed in a centering pass from sophomore German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) for his single-season tying 20th goal. Junior Daniel Jones (Ronks, PA/Pequea Valley) got into the scoring act just 57 seconds later when he took a Sturm pass and fired a shot into the net for his second goal of the season and DSU (8-2-1 overall) made it 3-0 just 57 seconds after that when freshman Tony Aufiero (Wall, NJ/Wall) scored on a penalty kick after Sturm had drawn a foul in the offensive box.
Freshman Nate Springer (Perkasie, PA/Central Bucks West) concluded the first-half scoring with a beautiful goal from about 30 yards out that bent into the upper right corner off a feed from junior Antony May (Lowell, MA/Lowell Catholic).
In the second half, the Defenders (7-5-1 overall) got on the scoreboard when Seth Davey knocked home his third goal of the season on a pass from Eric Shelner. Sturm made it 5-1 at the 66:01 mark with his record breaker on a corner kick. Reyes sent a high crossing pass into the box and Sturm was there to head it into the right corner of the net.
The Bulldogs out-shot Baptist Bible, 26-5, and held a 13-1 edge in corner kicks. Junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) made three saves, while Dan Durrwachter and Andrew Cartledge each made three saves for the Defenders.
The Bulldogs return to the road on Saturday when they travel to The University of Scranton for a battle of two unbeaten teams in the Freedom Conference. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
