Center Valley, PA (October 4, 2006) – Freshman Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) broke the three-game match record for kills with 23 but the DeSales University volleyball team was unable to pull out a victory falling to King’s College, 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-28), in an evenly matched Freedom Conference match on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
DSU (7-14, 1-3 Freedom) led in all three matches and led late in each of the last two but were unable to finish any of the three matches and fell to the Lady Monarchs (12-9, 3-1 Freedom). The Bulldogs were up 24-21 in the second game and lost 30-28 and led 28-26 in the third game but fell once again by the 30-28 score.
Mellon was sensational recording 23 kills with just five errors on 56 attempts. The 23 kills breaks a record that had stood for 10 years and was held by Christa Hannis who had previously held the mark of 22 kills in a three-game match. Mellon now has 306 kills on the season and is averaging 4.14 kills per game.
Also playing well was fellow freshman Jeri Detsch (Bethlehem, PA/Dieruff) who stepped into game three and nearly provided a rallying spark totaling five kills and five digs in just one game played. Sophomore Rachel Koury (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) had a team-high 16 digs and junior Gia Zimmerman (Blandon, PA/Reading Central Catholic) totaled 14 digs in the loss. DSU was hurt by errors making eight service errors and nine ball-handling errors in the match.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, October 7th when they travel to Albright College for a tri-match with Gwynedd-Mercy College beginning at 10:00 am.
