Women’s Hoops Cruises past Keystone in Season Opener

Junior Amanda Kuperavage had her fifth career double-double in the season opening win on Saturday evening.

Center Valley, PA, (November 18, 2006) – The DeSales University women’s basketball team cruised past Keystone College, 104-46, in the 2006-07 season opener and in the opening round of the first annual Starter’s Pub Tip-off Tournament hosted by DeSales University on Saturday and Sunday.
 
        The Bulldogs (1-0 overall) will take on The College of New Jersey in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday at 3:00 pm.  TCNJ (1-0 overall) was a 53-48 winner over Ursinus College (0-1 overall) in the other opening round game.  Ursinus will face Keystone (0-1 overall) in the consolation game beginning at 1:00 pm.
 
        DSU never looked back in the first game opening up a 12-2 lead and taking a 23-point cushion into the halftime locker rooms.  The 104 points marks the first time since the 1999-00 season that DeSales has reached the century mark and falls just short of the all-time record for points in a game which is 111 points and has been accomplished twice, most recently during the 1994-95 season.
 
        The Bulldogs shot 42.6 percent from the field and held KC to just 29.3 percent shooting.  DSU grabbed 65 rebounds, setting a new record for boards in one game and forced 38 Giant turnovers in the win.
 
        Junior Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) registered her fifth career double-double with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Sophomore Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) tallied 13 points, freshman Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) tallied 12 points and fellow freshman Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) tallied her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
 
        Sophomore LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) had nine points and junior Jenna Stampf (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

        In the second game, Breanne Depken tallied a team-high 12 points to lead the Lions who had a one-point lead at the half and used an 8-0 run in the second half to pull away from the Bears to earn a spot in the championship game.  Mary Kate Daley had 19 points and seven rebounds for Ursinus.
