Late Rally in Game One leads King’s past DeSales in Freedom Doubleheader

Senior Jenna Rau was 3-for-3 with two RBI's in the game two loss to King's College.

Center Valley, PA (March 25, 2006) – The King’s College Lady Monarchs used a late rally in the top of the seventh inning in game one to record a 7-5 win and carried that momentum into game two with a 6-3 win over the Bulldogs to complete the sweep in a Freedom Conference doubleheader on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon.

DSU opened up a commanding 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning in game one when junior Amanda Martinenza (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) smacked a bases clearing double into the left-center field gap.  Martinenza added her fourth RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk to make the score 5-2.

After junior Jennifer Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) retired the Lady Monarchs in order in the top of the sixth inning, King’s mounted a rally down three runs in the seventh.

Consecutive singles to start the inning put runners on first and second.  After a foul out to the catcher and a strike out looking put two outs on the board, freshman Abbey Knoblauch cut the lead down to one run with a two-run double.  Junior Justine Maggio then tied the score with an RBI single before Cybularz retired the seventh Lady Monarch of the inning on a pop out to first base.

Senior Danielle Jenson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) hit a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh but DSU failed to move her off the second base bag as the game headed to extra frames.

In the top of the eighth, junior Mari Valonis reached base on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Bulldog shortstop.  Senior Cassy Shiffer doubled home Valonis and later scored on an RBI single from Kelsey Shreaves giving King’s a 7-5 lead and eventually the win as Shreaves worked around a lead-off walk, retiring the next three Bulldog hitters in the bottom of the eighth.

In the second game, King’s opened up leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-1 before Valonis hit a two-run home run to right-center in the top of the seventh inning to give the Lady Monarchs the 6-3 win.  DSU had pulled within one run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from senior Jenna Rau (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) but the Bulldogs left the bases loaded for the second time in the game.

Cybularz suffered the loss in game one, pitching all eight innings and allowing 10 hits and six earned runs to go along with six punch outs.  Junior Elise Wilk (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) took the loss in game two, allowing nine hits and two earned runs over seven innings with five strikeouts.

Jenson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Martinenza was 1-for-1 with a double, three walks and four RBI’s in game one.  Rau was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI’s and freshman Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was 2-for-3 in the game two loss for DeSales.

DSU is scheduled to return to action on Sunday as they host William Paterson University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
