Center Valley, PA (March 29, 2006) – The DeSales University baseball got back on the winning track Wednesday, snapping a four-game slide defeating Arcadia University, 9-5, in non-conference action on a beautiful spring day at Butz Field.
Senior Jon Pallone (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) earned the win and finished with a pitching line of six innings, 11 hits, three runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Mike Concilio (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and junior Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) combined to pitch the final 1.1 innings allowing just one hit and striking out one to preserve the win.
Offensively, sophomore Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, sophomore Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) and freshman Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) each scored once and had two RBI’s and freshman Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) scored twice and knocked in two runs on the afternoon.
Arcadia jumped ahead early with single runs in the top of the first and second innings before DSU scored five times in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Freshman Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) knocked in the first run with a bases loaded walk before Repas and Heard each had two RBI singles to plate the other four tallies.
The Knights cut the lead to two runs with another run in the third but Matejicka’s RBI single in the third pushed the lead back to three, 6-3, in the bottom half. Arcadia mounted a final rally in the seventh when junior John Connell, who went 5-for-5 on the day, knocked in two runs with a double, but the Bulldogs answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single from Bianca and cruised the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday, March 31st as they get back into Freedom Conference play with the first of a three-game set with Delaware Valley College this weekend. Friday’s game will be at DVC and begins at 3:00 pm.
