Chapman Hurls Bulldogs Past #25 Stevens Tech, 4-2

Hoboken, NJ, (April 12, 2006) – Senior Joe Chapman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) pitched 6.2 strong innings allowing seven hits and just one run to lead the DeSales University baseball team past 25th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Dobbelaar Field.

Chapman struck out six and improved to 1-0 on the season as the Bulldogs move to 13-10 overall.  The loss drops Stevens Tech to 20-6 overall.

Along with the Cambridge Search Player of the game, Chapman, freshman Andrew Kulhamer (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) tossed 1.2 strong innings and junior Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) entered to retire the final two batters to record his third save of the season.

Offensively, DSU scored three of its four runs in the first two innings and had all four of its runs by the fourth inning.  Freshman Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) got things started with a lead-off walk.  He moved to third on a throwing error by the pitcher and later scored on an RBI groundout from fellow freshman Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph).

In the second, DSU manufactured a few more runs.  Junior Luke Pisker (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Freshman Mike Pennington (Dresher, PA/LaSalle College) reached via fielder’s choice and Pisker was safe at second on a throwing error by the Stevens Tech third baseman.

Freshman Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) bunted both runners over one base and Pisker scored on a failed pick-off attempt and throwing error by the shortstop.  Pennington moved to third on the play and scored on freshman John Pisker’s (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) RBI groundout.  In the fourth, L. Pisker finalized the DSU scoring with a solo shot to right-field, his third dinger of the season.

DSU returns to action for its sixth game in five days on Thursday when they host King’s College in a Freedom Conference showdown at Butz Field.  The game will be televised live by the TV2 sports crew and on Service Electric cable TV.  First pitch is set for 3:30 pm and the game will also replay at 7:00 pm on channel 2 locally if you have Service Electric cable service.
