Wilkes-Barre, PA, (April 17, 2006) – The DeSales University baseball team dropped both ends of its Freedom Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon to King’s College, 6-4 and 5-1, as the Monarchs sweep the season series and move into first place in the Freedom Conference standings entering the final few weeks of the regular season.
In the first game, senior Matt Reppert (Allentown, PA/Dieruff) fell to 2-2 on the season allowing six runs (three earned) over 5.2 innings. The Monarchs (16-10, 10-3 Freedom) answered DSU’s run in the top of the first inning with three tallies in the bottom of the first to take command. The Bulldogs (14-13, 6-4 Freedom) got within one run on two different occasions but were never able to get over the hump in the loss.
DeSales managed just five hits and made three costly errors, leading to three unearned runs for the Monarchs in the loss. Freshman Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had two hits and one RBI and senior Derek Miller (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) and sophomore Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) each had RBI hits to lead the offensive attack.
In the second game, sophomore JT Brotosky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was masterful thru the first four innings but gave up five runs (only one earned run) in the fifth inning as the Bulldog defense committed another costly error with two outs that would have ended the inning and allowed the Monarchs to score four unearned runs and take a 5-0 lead.
DSU got on the board in the sixth when Matejicka hit a sacrifice fly scoring sophomore Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) but were unable to get anything else going at the plate finishing with just four hits and one run.
Brotosky lasted 5.1 innings allowing five hits and one earned run. Heard, Matejicka, freshman Anthony Calafato (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional) and fellow freshman Mike Pennington (Dresher, PA/LaSalle College) had the four hits for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, April 18th as they return home to host Kean University in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
