Center Valley, PA, (April 19, 2006) – The DeSales University men’s lacrosse team nearly pulled off a major upset in the MAC Conference standings leading 4-3 at the half but failed to score in the third period and eventually fell to FDU-Florham, 8-6, in an MAC contest on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in Center Valley, PA.
Trailing by one goal at the break, the Devils (5-5, 5-3 MAC) scored five unanswered goals in the third period and to start the fourth period to end DSU’s (1-11, 0-7 MAC) upset bid. The game-winner came at the 6:17 mark of the fourth period and was scored by sophomore Peter Schaaf.
Junior Ben Conroy (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) had perhaps his best career game, stopping 19 Devil shots and allowing just eight goals in between the pipes. Juniors Jon-Erik Stamatelos (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and Andrew Stamatelos (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) combined to grab 13 ground balls to lead the ground attack.
On offense, sophomore
Dan Thomer (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) totaled two goals and freshman
Matthew Brancaccio (Greenvale, NY/North Shore) had one goal and two assists to lead the scoring.
Sophomore Kevin Thomer (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) tallied one goal and one assist, sophomore Jay Young (Pittstown, NJ/North Hunterdon) and senior Chris Laveglia (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) each scored once and freshman Joshua Van Hart (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) had one goal in the loss.
DSU returns to action on Saturday, April 22nd as they travel to Elizabethtown College for another MAC Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
