Madison, NJ (April 2, 2006) – Freshman Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored in Game One, and freshman Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) smacked a grand slam in Game Two as the DeSales University softball team swept FDU-Florham, 8-6 and 8-4, on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 8-11 (2-4 Freedom) while the Devils dropped to 12-9 (3-5 Freedom).
In game one, the Bulldogs started the scoring in the top of the third when Pfitzenmayer singled and later scored on an error. DeSales would add five more runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by senior outfielder Jenna Rau (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) and senior pitcher Danielle Jenson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth). After a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), junior first baseman Jaime Stover (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) drilled an RBI double to make the score 6-0.
FDU would come storming back in their half of the fourth when freshman outfielder Jen Haas singled and senior first baseman Amanda Morrison doubled. Senior shortstop Jess Cunningham singled home Haas and Morrison also scored on a Bulldog error. Sophomore outfielder Danielle Catanzaro then came up and blasted a two-run home run to make the score 6-4. The Devils would add another run in the inning when sophomore pitcher Kristin Loriot walked and came around to score on an error.
DeSales would respond in the top of the fifth inning with a two RBI double by Pfitzenmayer, increasing the lead to 8-5 and the Devils scored their last run in their half of the fifth when Cunningham drilled a solo home run to center field.
Jenson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and also picked up the win on the mound, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits.
In game two the Bulldogs jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the third inning thanks to four Devil errors. Junior pitcher Jennifer Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) had an RBI single in the inning.
FDU got on the board in the third inning on an RBI double by Haas and tied the game, 3-3, in the fourth inning on RBI singles by sophomore designated player Tara Hulse and sophomore catcher Kelly Nover.
DeSales put five runs on the board in the fifth inning on Roxandich’s grand slam and a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).
A solo home run in the bottom of the seventh by junior third baseman Kristen Olah brought the Devils to within 8-4, but DeSales got the final three outs to preserve the victory.
Cybularz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored at the plate, and got the win on the hill allowing four runs (three earned) on 12 hits.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, April 4th as they travel cross-town to take on local rival Moravian College beginning at 3:00 pm.
