Chester, PA (September 16, 2006) – Senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) scored three goals and added one assist to lead the DeSales University men’s soccer team past Widener University, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.
Sturm scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick and pass from sophomore German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) to make it 1-0 at the 12:49 mark. The Pioneers (1-3-1 overall) answered with a tally at the 24:55 mark when William James scored off an assist from Travis Jones.
The Bulldogs (3-2 overall) took over after the Widener goal scoring four unanswered goals to provide the final margin. Reyes scored the eventual game-winner just under three minutes after Widener had tied the game on an unassisted goal at the 27:42 mark and sophomore David Ackley (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) tallied his third goal of the season at the 30:24 mark to make it a 3-1 game at the half.
Sturm took over in the second half scoring his second goal at the 59:34 unassisted and added the exclamation point at the 63:49 mark on a pass from freshman Marc Leonard (Bondville, VT/Burr and Burton Academy). Sturm now has 84 career points and is just five points shy of moving into fourth place on the all-time scoring list.
DeSales and Widener each had 14 shots, while the Pioneers held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) had six saves for the Bulldogs, while his counterpart Marty Squicciarini made nine stops for Widener.
The Bulldogs will look to make it two in a row on Tuesday, September 19th when they travel to Delaware Valley College for the first Freedom Conference game of the season beginning at 4:00 pm.
