Doylestown, PA (September 19, 2006) – Senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) continued his torrid play scoring four goals and adding two assists for the DeSales University men’s soccer team in its 6-1 win over Delaware Valley College in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.
Sturm has earned Freedom Conference Player of the Week honors each of the last two weeks and is well on his way to earning a third straight with his performance on Tuesday. He now has nine goals and four assists for 22 points on the season. Sturm has moved into a tie for third place all-time in points (97), fourth place all-time in goals scored (39) and fifth place all-time in assists (19).
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard just 1:33 into the game as Sturm found junior Daniel Jones (Ronks, PA/Pequea Valley) for his first goal of the season. Sturm then took over the game scoring three straight goals over a span of 13 minutes and 15 seconds to give DSU a commanding 4-0 lead heading into halftime. The first of his three tallies came at the 12:03 mark, his second came just 2:31 later and his third came at the 25:18 mark on an assist from junior Kyle Moore (Hockessin, DE/Salesianum).
The Aggies got on the board to start the second half when Chris Wellington scored on assist from Trevor Provost at the 51:07 mark. Sophomore German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) made it 5-1 with his second tally of the season at the 54:06 and Sturm put an exclamation point on the win with his fourth of the day on an assist from freshman Marc Leonard (Bondville, VT/Burr and Burton Academy) at the 60:30 mark.
Junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) made five saves in between the pipes for DeSales and freshman Keith Barry (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) stopped one shot in his first career game. DSU out-shot DVC, 33-10, and held a 13-0 edge on corner kicks.
Sturm’s first-half scoring set two DeSales records including fastest consecutive goals by the same player (2:31) and fastest three consecutive goals by the same player (13:15).
The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday evening when they travel cross-town to take on local rival Muhlenberg College beginning at 7:00 pm.
