Allentown, PA (September 21, 2006) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with nationally ranked Muhlenberg College on Thursday evening in non-conference action.
Senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) gave DSU a 1-0 lead in the game when he scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out. His shot went over a defensive wall consisting of 6-7 players, hit the left post and caromed into the net.
The Bulldogs (4-2-1 overall) took the lead into halftime but surrendered just 1:11 into the second half. Billy Dalton scored his second goal of the season to open the second half as he fired a shot thru a swarm of players just after the ball had been cleared on a corner kick. The ball somehow made it thru the group of players and slid past the goalie into the lower right corner.
That goal ended the scoring for both teams that included two overtimes and 110 total minutes. Junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) was sensational in goal for the Bulldogs. Riedmiller made seven stops, one of which was a point blank stop in the first half off a laser shot just five yards in front of him.
Muhlenberg (3-1-1 overall) held a 17-7 edge in shots and had a 13-2 advantage on corner kicks. DSU returns to action on Wednesday, September 27th when they travel to FDU-Florham for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
