Center Valley, PA (September 28, 2006) – The DeSales University women’s soccer team fell just short in its comeback bid, falling to Widener University in a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon, 1-0.
The game was a tale of two halves as the Pioneers (6-2-1 overall) dominated play in the first half en route to a 1-0 lead, while the Bulldogs (3-6 overall) came out strong in the second half to control play but were unable to find the tying goal.
WU out-shot DeSales 10-1 in the first half, while DSU held a 9-3 edge in the second half. Widener scored the lone goal of the game late in the first half. Sam Baer sent a free kick into the box, the ball was headed towards the net and was saved by the DSU keeper but the rebound fell right to the feet of Casey LeRoy who knocked the ball into the wide open net for the eventual game-winner.
In the second half, DSU came within inches of tying the game several times. DSU had two breakaway chances that both went wide of the net and a third chance on a centering pass that was headed towards the goal but caromed off the near post and out in front of the net before it was cleared by the Pioneer defense.
Robin Tarasevich and Alee Gunter split time in goal for Widener, each making one save to combine for the shutout. Senior Kelly Hinkle (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) made seven saves for the Bulldogs in the loss.
DSU returns to action on Homecoming Saturday when they host Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
