German Reyes

Men’s Soccer Blasts King’s, 7-0

Sophomore German Reyes scored two goals and added one assist in the 7-0 win over King's College on Saturday.

Center Valley, PA (September 30, 2006) – Five different Bulldogs scored and the DeSales University men’s soccer team cruised past King’s College, 7-0, in a Freedom Conference game on Homecoming Saturday to win its second straight game and stay unbeaten in its last five contests.

Sophomore German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) and senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) led the offensive barrage with Reyes totaling two goals and one assist and Sturm tallying two more goals to give him 15 goals and five assists for 35 points on the season.  Sturm is now just eight points away from moving into second place on the all-time scoring list.

Reyes opened the scoring at the 33:11 mark when he connected for his third goal of the season.  Sturm had a free kick from about 35 yards out, his shot was saved but the rebound bounced out, freshman Mark Leonard (Bondville, VT/Burr and Burton Academy) touched the ball just past the keeper who tried to jump on it and Reyes was there to fire it into a wide open net.

Sturm made it a 2-0 game in the first half with a goal at 42:34.  The Bulldogs had a free kick just inside the midfield line as freshman Tony Aufiero (Wall, NJ/Wall) sent a long pass into the far right corner, where sophomore David Ackley (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) controlled and immediately fired a centering pass into the box.  Sturm turned his back to the net and sent a bicycle kick shot to the left post and just past a diving Monarch (2-7, 0-3 Freedom) keeper for his 14th tally of the season.

The flood gates opened in the second half as DeSales (6-2-1, 3-0 Freedom) scored five times to put the game away.  Ackley scored on a free kick header off a pass from senior Phil Yetter (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) at 48:56 and Sturm scored his second of the day on a header off another centering pass from Leonard.

Yetter scored his first goal of the season on a rocket shot from about 20 yards out off a beautiful feed from Reyes, Reyes scored his second the same way he scored his first goal as sophomore Chris Ravita (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) sent a long shot off a free kick towards the goalmouth, the King’s keeper made the save but was unable to hang onto the ball and Reyes immediately knocked the ball into the net.

Freshman Charles Mariner III (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) then finished the scoring on a corner kick taking sophomore Stephen Thompson’s (Robbinsville, NJ/Lawrence) pass and knocking the ball into the net for his first career goal.

The defense was stellar all day long limited the Monarchs to just six shots on goal in recording the second shutout of the season.  Aufiero, Ravita, sophomore Tim Hall (Montclair, VA/Bishop Ireton) and sophomore Andrew Marshall (Greene, NY/Greene Central) all had a hand in the shutout and helping junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) who had to make just three saves in the win.

The Bulldogs return to action on Monday, October 2nd when they play host to Keystone College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
