Center Valley, PA (September 30, 2006) – The DeSales University women’s soccer team suffered another heartbreaking defeat falling to Wilkes University, 2-1, in Freedom Conference action on Homecoming Saturday.
The loss is the third straight for the Bulldogs (3-7, 1-2 Freedom) all of which have come by just one goal. Among the seven DSU losses, six of them have been by just one goal.
Wilkes (7-2-1, 2-0-1 Freedom) opened the scoring just 5:14 into the game when Catherine Simone took advantage of a DSU mistake when the Bulldog keeper was unable to hold onto a long shot in front of the net. The ball squirted free and Simone was there to touch the ball into the wide open net.
The score remained 1-0 until the Lady Colonels struck again with just 14 seconds left in the opening half. Rebecca Duttry took a long pass from Gina Robinson, dribbled down the right side, sent a centering pass into the box and a charging Christina Waldele slipped a shot past the DSU keeper to make it 2-0.
The second half was a hard-fought evenly played game in which DeSales capitalized on a hand ball inside the scoring box. Freshman Emily LaDuke (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored her third goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 76:48 mark.
Wilkes out-shot DeSales, 19-5, and held a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Senior Kelly Hinkle (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) made eight saves in the loss, while her counterpart Liz Pauly did not have to make a save in the win.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, October 4th when they travel to Cedar Crest College for a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
