David Ackley

Ackley’s Goal leads DeSales past Cabrini, 2-1, in Season Opener

Sophomore David Ackley scored the game-winner just 18 seconds into the second half to lead DeSales past Cabrini, 2-1.

Center Valley, PA, (September 5, 2006) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team played its first-ever game on the brand new soccer field on a rainy Tuesday afternoon and sophomore David Ackley (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) made sure the Bulldogs left the field for the first time with a win scoring the game-winner just 18 seconds into the second half to lead DeSales past Cabrini College, 2-1.

Ackley’s game-winner came as a centering pass into the box was headed out by the Cavalier (1-2 overall) defense but right to Ackley who fired the ball back towards the net and found nylon.  Senior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) had given DSU (1-0 overall) a 1-0 lead early in the first half when he took a saved shot from sophomore German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) and deposited into the back of the net.  The shot was knocked away by a diving keeper but was unable to be controlled and the rebound fell to the feet of Sturm who was following the play.

Cabrini tied the game mid-way thru the first half when Mike McDevitt headed in a long pass from Brian Moran and past a diving Bulldog keeper.  McDevitt nearly tied the game once again in the second half when his free kick with about 10 minutes left sailed over the keeper’s head but hit the crossbar and caromed away.

Junior Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) made four saves for the Bulldogs while his counterpart, Colin Hinkelmon stopped seven shots, including a penalty kick early in the second half.  The shots were tied at 17 a piece and DSU held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday as they travel to Richard Stockton College to take on William Paterson University in a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
