Center Valley, PA (September 6, 2006) – Junior Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) redirected senior Bethany Hepner’s (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) shot mid-way thru the first overtime to lift the DeSales University field hockey team past local rival Moravian College, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Fasching Fields.
Sparango’s goal was the first of the season and gave Hepner two assists on the game after she assisted on the Bulldogs first goal which tied the game at one mid-way thru the second half. Senior Stephanie Milowicki (Hockessin, DE/St. Mark’s) scored the game tying goal at the 46:15 mark. Moravian had a 1-0 lead at the half as Savannah Bayer scored on an assist from Julia Garofalo at the 12:58 mark.
DeSales (2-0 overall) dominated the entire game out-shooting Moravian (1-2 overall) 38-11. Moravian took advantage of the few chances it got, scoring in the first half and nearly ending the game twice in the overtime.
The Greyhounds appeared to score just three minutes into the OT, but the shot was ruled just outside the scoring circle and play continued. A few minutes later, MC had a 1-on-1 breakaway with the DSU keeper but a shot to the far corner was knocked away by freshman Molly Pope (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) and the Bulldogs capitalized scoring just a few moments later.
Senior Amanda Gaun was outstanding in between the pipes for Moravian as she stopped 19 shots and made numerous diving saves to keep the Greyhounds in the game. The Hounds also had one defensive save, by Beverly Beaver, to keep the game tied. Pope finished with five saves for the Bulldogs.
DSU will return to action on Friday, September 8th when they travel cross-town to take on its other local rival, Muhlenberg College, at 7:00 pm.
