Center Valley, PA (January 15, 2007) – Senior Kirby Lutz (Easton, PA/Pen Argyl) and sophomore LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) combined for 47 points to lead the DeSales University women’s basketball team to its seventh straight win, 79-61, over Richard Stockton College on Monday evening in Billera Hall.
Lutz recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Burke totaled a game-high 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting and dished out a game-high five assists. The Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent for the game and forced 22 Osprey turnovers. DSU also canned 24-of-28 (85.7%) from the free throw line and out-rebounded RSC, 41-34, for the win.
Leading by just three, 26-23, the Bulldogs went on a 15-4 run to take a 14-point first-half lead. Burke and Lutz combined for all 15 points during the spurt including 10 by Burke and five by Lutz. A 21-8 run midway thru the second half put the game away, extending a nine-point advantage into DSU’s largest lead of the game, 69-47, with 6:47 left to play.
The win improves DeSales to 12-3 overall, while the Ospreys fall to 5-9 on the season. Sophomore Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) also reached double digits totaling 13 points and pulling down six rebounds and junior Jenna Stampf (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
RSC was led by Jenna Shenk with 12 points and Jenn Russell with nine points. Alicia Morris pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and had seven points in the loss.
DeSales returns to action on Wednesday, January 17th when they face Drew University in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
