BOX SCORE
Center Valley, PA (October 15, 2007) – The DeSales University field hockey team fell short in its bid to upset Freedom Conference defending champ, King's College, on a beautiful Monday afternoon falling to the Lady Monarchs, 1-0, in the first overtime.
DSU (6-8, 1-1 Freedom) had control of most of this game holding a 15-14 edge in shots, while both teams had nine penalty corners. King's (10-3, 3-0 Freedom), however, was the aggressor in overtime gaining an early corner that was thwarted by the Bulldogs before senior Debbie Wychock dribbled the length of the field, beat a DSU defender and slid a shot past the keeper to give KC the win.
The game-winner came just 1:50 into a fast and furious first overtime period. King's had an early corner and saw its shot off the corner saved by sophomore Molly Pope (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach). DSU countered on the play and had a chance to score but its shot went wide and Wychock countered that play with her game-winning length of the field drive.
Despite the 15-14 advantage on shots, the Bulldogs put just three on goal as Kari Leach had to make just three saves for the Lady Monarchs. Nine of the 14 King's shots were on net and Pope was able to stop all but one of them in the loss.
DSU will look to start a new winning streak on Wednesday, October 17th when they return to action hosting Delaware Valley College in another Freedom Conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
