Womens Tennis hands Elizabethtown First Loss, 5-3

Freshman Kate Steiner earned two wins in the 5-3 win over Elizabethtown College on Wednesday.

Elizabethtown, PA (October 17, 2007) – The DeSales University women's tennis team concluded the team portion of the fall season by handing Elizabethtown College its first loss of the season, 5-3, in a non-conference match on the road.
 
        The Bulldogs finish the fall with a 9-3 overall record, while the Blue Jays fall to 4-1 overall. DSU started the day with two points in the doubles competition as seniors Courtney McClurkin (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) and Mary Kate McElvaney (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) won 8-6 at the No. 1 spot and freshmen Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) won 9-7 at the No. 3 spot.
 
        In singles play DSU took home three wins as McClurkin earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot, senior Liz Guidon (Northampton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) earned a 6-5, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot and sophomore Nickie Brackbill (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Jess Smith (Abbottstown, PA/Delone Catholic) shook off a loss in the first set of her match at the No. 4 spot to take the second set 6-3 and was leading 4-3 in third before the match was called due to darkness.

       The Bulldogs will conclude its fall season with the MASCAC Individual Championships Tournament this weekend at the Hempfield Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
