BOX SCORE
Center Valley, PA (October 20, 2007) – The DeSales University women's soccer team saw its playoff hopes come to an end on Saturday afternoon falling to Manhattanville College, 2-1, in a Freedom Conference game on a windy Saturday afternoon.
The Valiants (4-11-2, 4-0 Freedom) out-shot the Bulldogs (4-11-1, 1-4 Freedom), 15-12, while DSU held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Manhattanville scored its first goal just 3:54 into the game as Elena Haynes took a pass from Holly Nonis inside the box and scored just inside the near post on the left side. The goal was the first of the year for Haynes.
The game remained just a one-goal affair into halftime and thru the first 28 minutes of the second half before the Valiants got an insurance goal as Amanda Perez volleyed home a centering pass from Carey Hickey who had centered the ball from the right end line. The goal was Perez' first of the season as well.
The insurance goal proved to be valuable as DeSales showed no quit and cut the margin in half at the 81:12 mark when freshman Justine Ciarleglio (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) scored her first goal of the season knocking in a corner kick feed from sophomore Emily LaDuke (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall).
LaDuke was inches away from tying the game about five minutes later when her blast from about 25 yards out seemed destined to go into the net just under the crossbar, but the Valiants keeper leaped and punched the ball over the goal and out of harm's way.
Sophomore Katie Halpin (Easton, PA/Notre Dame) had another solid game in goal making five saves in between the pipes for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, October 24th when they travel to King's College for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
