Wilkes-Barre, PA (October 31, 2007) – The fourth seeded DeSales University field hockey suffered a 2-1 loss to top seeded King's College in the opening round of the Freedom Conference playoffs on Wednesday afternoon eliminating them from the conference tournament.
King's (14-4 overall) opened up a 2-0 first-half lead and held off a furious second-half comeback attempt by the Bulldogs (8-11 overall) in the second half to advance to the Freedom Conference championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Monarchs enjoyed a slim 11-10 edge in shots, while the Bulldogs had a 7-5 advantage on penalty corners.
Ave Moran got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at the 7:48 mark of the first half and KC made it a 2-0 game just eight minutes later as Sarah McGrady scored off an assist from Megan Farrell. The lead stood into the half before the Bulldogs came out strong in the second half with a late rally.
Sophomore Meghan Iudicello scored an unassisted tally at the 49:31 of the second half to pull the Bulldogs within one goal but were unable to put another shot past the Lady Monarch keeper and settled for a 2-1 loss in their first-ever Freedom Conference playoff game.
Both goalkeepers, including sophomore Molly Pope (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) made seven saves in the game. The Bulldogs finish its season with an 8-11 overall record and will await a possible bid into the ECAC Tournament announced on Monday afternoon.
