Gwynedd-Valley, Pa. (November 27, 2007) – Junior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the DeSales University women's basketball team past Gwynedd-Mercy College, 82-65, in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening.
DeSales (4-0 overall) broke open a close game mid-way thru the first half using a 21-4 run extending a two-point lead into a 19-point lead, 39-20, with 4:14 left to play. Seven different players scored during the run including Burke with nine tallies. The lead grew to as many as 20 points and was 18 as both teams headed to the locker room.
The Bulldogs shot a blistering 62.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded GMC, 18-9, in the half. DSU only had four turnovers in the opening twenty minutes and distributed 15 assists in the half.
The second half was back-and-forth the entire way as the Griffins (2-2 overall) tried to chip away at the lead but every time they seemed to make a run the Bulldogs answered with a quick spurt of their own.
DeSales finished the game shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from three-point land. The Bulldogs held a 40-29 edge on the boards and committed just 10 turnovers while dishing out 26 assists.
In addition to her 26 points, Burke registered seven assists and four rebounds. Junior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) and sophomore Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) each totaled 15 points with Rarick adding six assists and Miller grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Sophomore Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) finished with seven points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks and senior Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) totaled seven points and nine rebounds. Junior Erica Sovak (Tuxedo, NY/George F. Baker) led the charge off the bench with six points.
GMC was led by Karen Tierney with 22 points and freshman Lauren Rosar with 16 points and nine rebounds.
DSU returns to action on Thursday, November 29th when they travel to local rival Muhlenberg College for another non-conference game beginning at 7:30 pm.
