Reading, Pa. (December 1, 2007) – A 31-7 run over a nine minute span midway thru the second half led the DeSales University women's basketball team past Albright College, 76-55, in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.
DSU (5-1 overall) trailed 42-39 at 12:55 mark when the run started with a lay-up from junior Erica Sovak (Tuxedo, NY/George F. Baker). Sophomore Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) connected on a three-pointer giving the Bulldogs a 44-42 lead and senior Jenna Stampf (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) hit two straight lay-ups pushing the lead to six points, 48-42.
The run ended with consecutive three-point plays from junior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) and a short jumper from senior Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) as six different players scored with junior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) and Stampf each totaling eight points during the spurt.
DeSales kept itself in the game in the first half and at the start of the second half with an excellent defensive effort. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting just 33.8 percent from the field but forced 25 Lion (5-1 overall) turnovers (including three defensive charges taken by Sovak) and out-rebounded Albright, 49-40.
Burke and Rarick each led the way with 18 points on the offensive end. Burke was 6-for-14 from the field and also grabbed four rebounds, while Rarick was once again terrific from the free throw line shooting 13-for-17 and added six assists. Kuperavage also reached double digits with 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds, five on the offensive end.
Stampf and Magrann led the charge off the bench with eight points and three assists each, while Sovak finished with seven points and six rebounds. Sophomore Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) led the team with nine rebounds and collected four steals in the win.
