Baseball starts new Winning Streak with 8-7 Win over Montclair State

Center Valley, PA (April 10, 2007) – Freshman Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn his second win of the season and the DeSales University baseball team started a new winning streak on Tuesday afternoon topping Montclair State University, 8-7, in a non-conference game at Butz Field.

The Bulldogs improve to 14-6 overall as they defeat the Red Hawks (11-12 overall) for just the second time in 16 career meetings.  DSU led 7-2 after scoring seven times in the third inning before MSU rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game.  The Bulldogs scored a lone tally in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) singled home sophomore Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) and that run held up as three pitchers including Walsh blanked Montclair State over the last four innings.

Sophomore Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph), senior Matt Lezinsky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and sophomore Mike Pennington (Dresher, PA/LaSalle) all had RBI’s during the seven-run third.  The Red Hawks also made two errors during the rally.  MSU tied the game in the fifth with five hits including two home runs including a two-run shot from Rob Bowness and a solo shot from Marc Palestina.

Walsh earns Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors after getting the final two outs of the fifth inning and allowing just two base-runners thru the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.  Senior Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) earned his second save of the season and the ninth of his career getting the last out on just one pitch after junior Mike Concilio (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) recorded the first two outs around two walks to start the inning.

Heard and junior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) each had two of the Bulldogs 10 hits and Treat scored twice to lead the attack.  Eight different Bulldogs had hits and seven different players scored runs in the win.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, April 11th when they Bulldogs face Alvernia College in another non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
