Center Valley, PA (April 11, 2007) – The DeSales University softball team split its third straight doubleheader winning game two of its twin-bill with FDU-Florham, 6-5, after suffering a 9-5 loss to the Devils in the doubleheader opener on Wednesday afternoon.
In the opener FDU (15-9, 7-1 Freedom) scored five times in the sixth inning to build a 9-1 lead before the Bulldogs (7-13, 2-6 Freedom) scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final score. The game was tied at one after the first inning before the Devils scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
DSU’s run in the first came on a solo home run from senior Jennifer Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll). Cybularz also started the sixth inning rally with a double and later scored on a double from sophomore Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty). Sophomore Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) followed Kensecki’s double with a two-run home run and freshman Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot.
Senior Elise Wilk (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) suffered the loss allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs to fall to 4-7 on the year.
In game two, DSU scored twice in the second, third and fourth innings to build a 6-2 lead and held on late to earn the doubleheader split. J. Cybularz earned her second win of the season lasting six innings allowing eight hits and four runs before Wilk came on in the seventh to earn her second save of the season and the third of her career by getting the last three outs.
Sophomore Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had a two-RBI single in the second, Moran and senior Amanda Martinenza (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) had RBI hits in the third frame and Kensecki and sophomore Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had RBI base hits in the fourth inning to provide the scoring. Pfitzenmayer and Andrews each had three hits in the two games to lead the offensive attack
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, April 14th when they travel to Drew University for another Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
