Center Valley, PA (April 14, 2007) – Freshman Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) threw out the final out in game one and had the game-winning RBI’s in game two and junior JT Brotosky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) got the Bulldogs off to a fast start with five solid innings on the mound in game one to lead the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Freedom Conference foe King’s College, 4-3 and 6-1, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Butz Field.
The sweep gives DSU (16-8, 8-2 Freedom) the regular season tiebreaker over King’s (19-5, 10-3) by taking two of three in this weekend’s series. The two wins also snap a six-game losing streak vs. the Monarchs dating back to last season as the Bulldogs now own a 26-25 lead in the all-time series.
Brotosky set the tone in the opener as he helped DSU build a 4-0 lead by breezing thru the first four innings allowing just two base-runners and striking out three. DSU scored once in the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord), added two more runs in the third on an RBI single from freshman Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) and an RBI single from junior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and made the score 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from junior Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield).
Brotosky allowed two runs in the fifth but stranded one runner with DSU still leading 4-2 thru five innings. Junior Mike Concilio (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and senior Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) did the rest as Concilio stranded a lead-off double in the sixth, struck out the first two batters in the seventh just before allowing one run on a double and a single. Kensecki came on to record his third save of the season as Neiman threw out JR Graver who was trying to move into scoring position at second base to end the game.
Heard and Matejicka each had two hits in the game one win and Brotosky earns Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors in game one as he improves to 3-1 on the year lasting five innings allowing just five hits and striking out four without allowing a walk in the win.
Game two saw the game tied at one entering the fifth inning as DSU pushed across one run in the bottom of the first on an error by the Monarch shortstop and King’s tied the game at one in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Faust. After Kensecki came in relief of freshman Mark Reilly (Cream Ridge, NJ/Notre Dame) and stranded two base-runners in the fifth, the Bulldogs blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Heard led off the inning with a walk and sophomore Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) beat out an infield single on a bunt down the first base line. Neiman came up and laced the first pitch he saw over the left fielder’s head all the way to the fence for a triple as Heard and Connors scored in front of him. Brotosky plated Neiman with the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly and Feher and Matejicka finished off the scoring with back-to-back home runs that sailed well over the right and left center field fences giving DeSales a 6-1 lead and ultimately the doubleheader sweep.
Kensecki earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season as he went three innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. Reilly was terrific in just his second career collegiate start throwing four strong innings allowing just four hits and striking out two also without a walk. Neiman, earns Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors in game two as he finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action, weather pending, at home tomorrow as they host The University of Scranton in another Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
