Madison, NJ (April 21, 2007) – The DeSales University offense shook off some week long rust in game two of a Freedom Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs split their doubleheader at Drew University, winning game two, 13-3, just before dropping the opener, 4-3, on a beautiful day in Madison.
The split gives DSU two wins in the three-game set with the Rangers and moves the Bulldogs to 18-9 overall and 10-3 in the Freedom Conference, while Drew falls to 9-18 overall and 3-9 in the Freedom.
In game one, Drew scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Rangers drew a bases loaded walk with two outs and the bases loaded to record the 4-3 win.
The Bulldogs fought back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning when junior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) singled home freshman Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) who doubled to lead-off the inning and the tying run came home when sophomore Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) singled home fellow sophomore Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph), but the Rangers countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take its 3-1 lead.
Junior Mike Concilio (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) suffered the loss despite striking out four in two innings of work out of the bullpen. Treat finished game one with two hits and one RBI as DSU managed just five hits for the game.
In game two, the DSU offense came alive totaling 15 hits and 13 runs to win the rubber game of the three-game weekend series. Freshman Mark Reilly (Cream Ridge, NJ/Notre Dame) earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season lasting 5.1 innings scattering eight hits and allowing just one earned run to go along with two strikeouts.
The Bulldogs scored in each of the first five innings including a five-run fifth that put the exclamation point on the 13-run attack. In the five-run fifth, junior JT Brotosky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) hit a three-run home run, his first collegiate home run, while Matejicka and freshman Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) each had RBI hits during the inning.
Four different players knocked in double digit runs including Brotosky (3 hits, 3 RBI’s), Matejicka (3 hits, 2 RBI’s), Bianca (3 hits, two RBI’s) and Treat (2 hits, 2 RBI’s). Neiman also had double digit hits (two) and also scored two runs out of the lead-off spot in the order.
DeSales returns to action on Sunday, April 23rd when they host Neumann College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Butz Field.
