Center Valley, PA (April 22, 2007) – The DeSales University baseball team recorded its 20th win for the eighth consecutive year and for the 13th time in the last 14 years by sweeping Neumann College, 9-4 and 19-3, in a non-conference doubleheader on another beautiful afternoon at Butz Field.
In game one, DSU (20-9 overall) trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored three times to take a 4-3 lead and broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead, 9-3.
In the three-run fourth, the Bulldogs scored its three runs on just one hit, a lead-off double from sophomore Zachary Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle). In the fifth, freshman Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh), freshman Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades), sophomore Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) and sophomore Mike Pennington (Dresher, PA/LaSalle) each had RBI hits during the rally.
Freshman Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills), the Cambridge Search Player of the Game, pitched 2.1 innings of no-hit relief to improve to 3-0 on the season. He allowed one unearned run and struck out three. Hess finished the game with three hits and two runs scored, while Neiman and Pennington each had two hits in the game one win.
In game two, DSU collected 19 hits en route to its 19 runs as the Bulldogs scored in all but one inning and crossed home plate seven times in the second inning to build a 10-2 early lead. Freshman Ronnie Wentz (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) pitched well once again earning his first career win with four solid innings allowing just five hits and one earned run to go along with four strikeouts.
Bianca earns Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors as he finished 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and six RBI’s. Neiman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, sophomore Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI’s and junior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.
Sophomore Mike Piekarski (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored off the bench, Hess finished with one hit, a home run, and three RBI’s, sophomore Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and freshman Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to round out the offensive leaders.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, April 24th when they take on local rival Moravian College for a non-conference game “under the lights” at Limeport Stadium beginning at 7:00 pm.
