Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Wilkes, Wins Seventh Straight with Game One Victory

Wilkes-Barre, PA (April 9, 2007) – The DeSales University baseball team earned its seventh straight win with a 7-5 game one win, but saw its winning streak snapped in the nightcap with a 3-2 loss to Wilkes University in game two of the Freedom Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The split moves DeSales to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in the Freedom, while Wilkes improves to 11—9 overall and 4-7 in the Freedom Conference.  Both games ended with seventh inning rallies as the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the seventh of game one to win 7-5 and the Colonels scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 3-2 win in game two.

In game one, DSU opened up a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first and two more in the third inning.  Senior Matt Lezinsky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and junior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had RBI hits during the first inning rally, while Lezinsky and sophomore Mike Pennington (Dresher, PA/LaSalle) each had RBI hits in the third inning.

Wilkes tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with the big blow coming on a three-run home run from Randy Dengler, but the Bulldogs answered with two runs in the seventh and junior Mike Concilio (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) set down the Colonels in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.  In the top of the seventh, freshman Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) had an RBI single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Lezinsky.

Concilio improves to 2-0 on the season as he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out four.  Lezinsky earns Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors in game one, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI’s.  Junior Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the game one win.

In game two, Wilkes took the early lead with two runs in the first inning before the Bulldogs tied it at two with two tallies in the third inning.  Neiman had an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.  The score remained until the seventh when Wilkes scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch after DeSales had loaded the bases intentionally with one out and a runner on third following a lead-off double.  The Bulldogs were able to get the second out on a pop-up but a wild pitch sealed its fate during the next at-bat.

Neiman had three of DSU’s seven hits in game two and Matejicka had two hits.  Senior Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) took the loss after pitching 2.2 innings allowing just two hits and one run while striking out three.

DSU returns to action on Tuesday, April 10th when they host Montclair State University for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
