Center Valley, PA (April 9, 2007) – Senior Amanda Martinenza (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) hit a solo home run and seniors Jennifer Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) and Elise Wilk (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) held off a late Lady Colonels rally in leading the DeSales University softball team past Wilkes University, 4-3, in game two of the Freedom Conference doubleheader after Wilkes took game one, 5-4, in nine innings.
The split moves DeSales to 6-12 overall and 1-5 in the Freedom Conference, while Wilkes moves to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the Freedom.
In game one the Bulldogs led 3-0 entering the sixth inning before four straight hits by the Colonels eventually tied the game at three as the game went into extra innings. DSU built its 3-0 lead with a two-RBI double from senior Jaime Stover (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) in the second inning and a solo home run from sophomore Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) in the fourth inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Lady Colonels scored twice with two outs on an RBI triple from Kathy Dalton and an RBI single from Gina Stefanelli. J. Cybularz led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run and freshman Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) singled with two out before a line out to the pitcher ended the game with Wilkes earning the 5-4 come from behind win.
Wilk took the loss going all nine innings scattering 11 hits and striking out nine. Senior Laurie Agresti earned the win going all nine innings allowing six hits and striking out 11.
In game two, Martinenza gave DSU a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second inning and the Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. During the fifth inning, freshman Emily Hoffman (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley), sophomore Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and sophomore Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) all scored via just one DSU hit and two Wilkes errors.
Wilkes scored one run in the sixth to make it 4-2 and Samantha Evanich hit a solo home run to make it 4-3 in the seventh before Wilk came in to record the last out of the game to earn her first save of the season. J. Cybularz was awarded the win going 6.2 innings allowing seven hits and striking out two.
DSU returns to action on Wednesday, April 11th when they host FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
