Ashley Sparango

Early Goal, Stingy Defense lead DeSales past DePauw, 2-0

Senior Ashley Sparango had one goal and one assist in the win over DePauw on Saturday.
Gambier, OH (September 1, 2007) – Junior Crissy Meehan (Harleysville, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) scored 20 seconds into the game and the DeSales University field hockey team blanked DePauw University, 2-0, to start the 2007 season with a shutout victory.

Meehan needed just 20 seconds in her first collegiate game to score her first collegiate goal as she took a pass from senior Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) on a break-away at the start of the game and scored giving DSU an early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldog defense, led by juniors Sarah Ball (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and Shannon Mascio (Collegeville, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Academy), did the rest as they limited DePauw (0-2 overall) to just 13 shots and sophomore Molly Pope (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) made eight saves in between the pipes to preserve the shutout.

In addition to her assist on Meehan's goal, Sparango scored an unassisted goal late in the second half to give DSU a two-goal edge.  DeSales finished with 22 shots.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they face Kenyon College (OH) in a non-conference game beginning at 10:00 am.
