Volleyball opens Marymount Tournament with Saturday Split

Sophomore Kerri Andrews broke the 4-game match record with 41 digs vs. Dickinson.
Arlington, VA (September 15, 2007) – The DeSales University volleyball team opened the Marymount University Tournament with a split of its two Saturday matches vs. Hiram College and Dickinson College.
 
        The Bulldogs fell to Hiram College (OH) in the first match of the day, 3-0 (30-14, 30-27, 30-15) but rebounded to defeat Dickinson College, 3-1 (30-24, 30-23, 26-30, 30-27) in the second match on Saturday.
 
        In the first match junior Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) led the way with eight kills and sophomore Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) tallied six kills and had one block. Freshman Alyssa Poplaski (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and sophomore Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) added 10 digs and junior Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) had 20 assists.
 
        In the second match, Andrews was the story as she broke the four-game match record with 41 digs. The previous record of 33, held by Cheryl Berger, had stood since the 1998 season. Mellon added 13 kills and 10 digs, freshman Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had 11 kills, 10 digs and two blocks and Rivera totaled eight kills.
 
        Uliana finished with 36 assists and 12 digs and senior Allie Boyer (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) totaled 13 digs in the win.

          DSU returns to action tomorrow when they face tournament host Marymount University in the final match of the tournament beginning at 11:00 am.
