Reading, PA (September 8, 2007) – The DeSales University Field Hockey team suffered its second straight loss falling to Alvernia College, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.
After falling behind 1-0 at the 12:38 mark of the first half, the Bulldogs (2-2 overall) answered back almost immediately as freshman Kelsey Strowhouer (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) brilliantly fed a pass to sophomore Meghan Iudicello (Nazareth, PA/Pen Argyl) in the middle of the circle and Iudicello took the pass and one-timed it past the Crusaders (2-2 overall) keeper.
Alvernia regained the lead at the 26:31 mark of the first half and the score stood into halftime. DSU nearly tied the game once again early in the second half when senior Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) broke thru in the circle and blasted a shot past the keeper on the far side but the ball caromed off the post and back into play.
Just after Sparango's near goal, Alvernia countered with its third goal of the game, an unassisted tally from Christy Miller. Sparango pulled the Bulldogs back to within one at the 63:12 mark when she took a long pass, beat two Crusader defenders and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal cage.
Alvernia countered once again with another unassisted tally at the 68:10 mark to post the final margin as DSU ran out of gas in the end. Alvernia out-shot DeSales, 20-12, as sophomore Molly Pope (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) made nine saves in the between the pipes.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, September 11th when they travel to Drew University for another non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
