Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 16, 2008) – The DeSales University women's basketball team held its second straight opponent under 50 points en route to a 69-40 win over Freedom Conference foe Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (13-2, 2-1 Freedom) collected 16 steals and dished out 16 assists while committing just seven turnovers in the win. Wilkes falls to 1-13 overall and 0-2 in the Freedom with the loss. The Lady Colonels enjoyed a 43-39 advantage on the glass but turned the ball over 28 times in the loss.
Leading 19-7 early on the Bulldogs went cold from the field and without a point for just over seven minutes but clung to a 19-16 lead while relying on their defense at the three minute mark. A lay-up plus one from junior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) ended the scoring drought and ignited a 12-4 run over the final 2:52 to give DSU a 31-20 halftime lead. Rarick had eight of DSU's 12 points during the run.
The second half was all DeSales as the Bulldogs shot 48.3 percent from the field and out-scored the home team by 18 points as the lead grew to as many as 33 points before the final 29-point margin.
Rarick and fellow junior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) each had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs as the only double figure scorers. Sophomore Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) added nine points and senior Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) added eight points.
Senior Jenna Stampf (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) and sophomore Emily Hoffman (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley) each had five points to lead the attack off the bench.
Mackensey O'Hara had a team-high 10 points for Wilkes off the bench. Katie Cappelloni added nine tallies and Sam Lynam totaled seven points in the loss.
DeSales takes the weekend off and does not return to action until Wednesday, January 23rd when they host King's College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
