Dover, Del. (January 3, 2008) – Junior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) of the DeSales University women's basketball team welcomed the New Year in style on Thursday evening lighting up the court with 34 points on 10-of-14 shooting in a 72-64 win over Wesley College in the Bulldogs first game in 16 days.
Burke scored 18 of her game-high 34 points in the opening half helping DeSales (9-2 overall) take a 41-33 lead into the locker room. DSU torched the nets at a 51.9 percent clip in the opening half to take the eight-point advantage.
In the second half the Wolverines (3-7 overall) cut the lead down to three points, 46-43, early in the half before Burke nailed her second of two second-half three-pointers to push the lead up to six points, 49-43.
DSU led by as many as 10 point on three different occasions in the second half before Wesley cut the lead down to four points, 68-64, with 1:13 left to play but Burke sealed the win scoring the last eight Bulldog points including four straight free throws with under a minute left to seal the win.
The Bulldogs owned the glass out-rebounding WC, 41-27, including 17 offensive rebounds but were victimized by 25 turnovers in the game. Burke finished the game shooting 4-for-5 from three-point land and a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. She added four steals and pulled down eight rebounds in the win.
In addition to Burke, several other Bulldogs had solid games including sophomore Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) with her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) also reached double digits with 10 points and added eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Bulldogs.
Senior Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) finished with six points and seven rebounds and sophomore Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) came off the bench to score four points.
Wesley was led by Cory Boyd with 18 points and seven assists. Michele Mules added 14 points off the bench including three treys and Dominique Barrett had 11 points and six rebounds in the loss.
