Reading, PA (October 11, 2008) – The DeSales University men's soccer team suffered its third straight loss falling to Freedom Conference foe Alvernia University, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon on late goal scored by the Crusaders.

The Bulldogs (5-8, 1-1 Freedom) lose to a Freedom Conference team for the first time in 14 games dating back to the 2006 season after they had posted a 1-0 record this year, a 5-0-1 record with two playoff wins last year, and won their last four games of the '06 season including two playoff wins. Alvernia improves to 4-7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Freedom with the win.

The Crusaders started the scoring at the 9:36 mark when Adam Lush scored his first goal of the year. The Bulldogs tied the game at one at the 24:53 mark when senior Andrew Marshall (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored his first tally of the year on an assist from junior Dustin Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May).

The game remained tied into halftime before the Marshall/Sturm connection struck again early in the second half as this time Sturm scored on a feed from Marshall giving DSU a 2-1 lead. The Crusaders re-tied the game 11 minutes later in the 59th minute when Ryan Rutherford scored off an assist from Lush.

Both teams battled over the next 30+ minutes before Alvernia broke the tie when Lush found the back of the next for the second time in this game and this season on an assist from Rutherford with just 2:57 left on the clock. DSU had several last gasp chances to score in the closing minutes including one shot that was cleared away off the line by a defender but were unable to get the tying marker in its first conference loss since the 2006 season.

Both teams were credited with 13 shots, while DeSales had large advantage in corner kicks, 9-1. The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wilkes University for an important early season Freedom Conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
