Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Widener; Rivera Totals 29 Kills

Chester, PA (October 11, 2008) – Senior Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) had a team-high 29 kills leading the DeSales University volleyball team to a split at a tri-match with Gwynedd-Mercy College and Widener University on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs started the day with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) win over the Griffins before they lost a 2-0 lead to Widener in a 3-2 (25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 19-17) loss to the host. DSU moves to 16-10 overall with the split.

In the win over GMC, senior Ashley Grube (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) had a team-best 11 kills and added two blocks. Rivera totaled eight kills and three service aces and junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) finished with 25 digs.

DSU won the first two games over the Pride before they dropped games three and four setting up a fifth set. After falling behind 11-4 in the fifth set, the Bulldogs rallied to tie the match but were unable to pull out win as Widener swept the final three sets for the win.

Rivera led the way with 21 kills and 19 digs. Grube added 17 kills and three blocks, sophomore Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) totaled 13 kills and two blocks, and freshman Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) totaled 11 kills. Andrews finished with 28 digs, freshman Cait Trovato (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) had 21 digs and senior Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) finished with 60 assists and 17 digs.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, October 21st when they travel to Delaware Valley College for a Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
