Gilroy’s Two Goals Lead DeSales past Manhattanville, 3-2

Sophomore Melissa Gilroy scored twice, including the game-winner with 1:56 left on Wednesday.

Purchase, NY (October 22, 2008) – Sophomore Melissa Gilroy (Shohola, PA/Delaware Valley) scored two goals including the second with 1:56 left on the clock to lift the DeSales University field hockey team past Manhattanville College, 3-2, on Wednesday evening in a Freedom Conference game.

The win moves DeSales to 7-10 overall and is the first of the season in the Freedom Conference as the Bulldogs improve to 1-5. MC falls to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in the Freedom with the loss.

DeSales took a 1-0 lead at the 14:05 mark of the first half when Gilroy scored her third goal of the season off an assist from fellow sophomore Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown). The lead stood until the 21:22 mark when Jen Ascencio scored to tie the score and Kristy Guichard scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Ascencio at the 25:05 mark to give the Valiants a 2-1 lead.

In the second half DSU wasted no time re-tying the score at two when Matthews scored her 10^th goal of the year on a penalty corner and assists from sophomore Amy Pulcini (Easton, PA/Easton) and junior Catherine McGrillen (Ballymena, Northern Ireland).

The game remained tied until the final moments of the game when Gilroy took advantage as she pushed home a shot off a rebound giving DSU the one-goal lead with under two minutes left and the Bulldogs held on for their first conference win of the year.

DeSales held a 14-9 edge in shots and had a 12-7 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Jen Bessinger (Langhorne, PA/Archbishop Wood) made two saves in between the pipes for the Bulldogs.

DSU returns to action on Tuesday, October 28^th when they host Alvernia College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
