Eastern Sweeps Bulldogs in Freedom Showdown

Freshman Lauren Hickey had a team-high eight kills in the loss to Eastern University on Thursday evening.

Center Valley, PA (October 23, 2008) – In a match-up of the Freedom Conference pre-season favorite and the 2007 defending champs, Eastern University got the better end with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-17) win over the DeSales University volleyball team on Thursday evening in Billera Hall.

After a dominating first set by the Eagles, DSU was up to the task in the second set coming from behind to forge a tied at 22 before the Eagles reeled off three straight points to take the second set. The third started neck-and-neck with the score tied at 11 mid-way thru but six straight points gave EU a 17-11 lead and they cruised from there for the win.

Leading DeSales was freshman Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) with eight kills. Sophomore Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) totaled six kills and had five digs, while junior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) finished with four kills and three blocks. Junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) played well with 12 digs and senior Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) had 22 assists and 12 digs.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, October 29^th when they travel to Misericordia University for the final regular season Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
