Cabrini Ends DeSales Home Win Streak with 3-2 Win in Pita Pit Opener

Center Valley, PA (October 3, 2008) – The DeSales University volleyball team lost for the first time in the last 16 matches at home falling to Cabrini College in the opening game of the Pita Pit Classic Tournament hosted by the Bulldogs Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Cabrini (10-8 overall) earned a 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 25-15, 19-25, 15-10) win in Billera Hall snapping a 15-match winning streak for DeSales (12-9 overall). The Bulldogs took the first set easily winning, 25-14, before the Cavs won a close second set, 25-23. Cabrini won the third set by 10 points, but DSU rebounded with a six-point win in the fourth. The Cavaliers opened up a quick 3-5 point lead in the fifth and final set and held on at the end for the win in the tournament opener. Arcadia won the other opening round match defeating Kean University, 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-17).

Leading DeSales was senior Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) with 16 kills and a .394 hitting percentage. Freshman Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) had 13 kills and three blocks, while senior Ashley Grube (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) and sophomore Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) each had 12 kills. Grube added four blocks and Fehnel had 16 digs and five service aces.

Junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) totaled 19 digs and freshman Katie Dziuma (Bronx. NY/Preston) finished with 13 digs in the loss.

The tournament continues on Saturday morning when DeSales plays Arcadia at 10:00 am, while Cabrini will face Kean also at 10 am. The teams switch courts for the final matches of the weekend at Noon.
