Bulldog Begin Title Defense Tonight at FDU-Florham

Senior Sharon Uliana was the Freedom Conference playoffs Most Valuable Player last season.
Center Valley, PA (November 5, 2008) – The DeSales University volleyball team begins the defense of its 2007 Freedom Conference championship tonight when they travel to second seeded FDU-Florham for the Freedom Conference semifinals as the #3 seed.

The match is slated to begin at 7:00 pm as the Bulldogs will enter the night with a 19-12 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Freedom Conference. The Devils finished the regular season with a 21-13 overall mark and a 7-1 record in the Freedom. FDU defeated DSU, 3-0, in late September to earn the #2 seed and the semifinal home match.

The playoff appearance is the third over the last four years for the Bulldogs and marks the sixth time DSU has made the Freedom Conference playoffs since joining the conference in 1997. DeSales has won one Freedom Conference championship (2007) and is 2-4 all-time in its previous five appearances including a 3-0 win over the Devils in last year's Freedom Conference title match.

Leading the Bulldogs will be senior Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) with a team-high 283 kills. Sophomore Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) ranks second on the team with 264 kills and a .267 hitting percentage to go along with 66 total blocks. Senior Ashley Grube (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) has 212 kills and a team-high 81 total blocks, while junior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) is the fourth Bulldog with 200+ kills at 203 and enters the match tonight needing just four kills to become the fifth player in DSU history with 1,000+ kills in a career.

Freshman Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) is just shy of 200 kills with 192 and junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) is the leader on defense with 528 digs (4.80 DPS). Senior Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) leads the team with 1,022 assists (9.29 APS) and is the reigning Freedom Conference playoffs Most Valuable Player.

The winner of the match on Wednesday evening will advance to the Freedom Conference championship match with the highest remaining seed hosting the championship match at a time to be announced. #4 Wilkes travels to #1 Eastern in the other semifinal on Wednesday evening.
