Baseball begins Season with 10-3 win over Eastern Mennonite

Senior Scott Matejicka had two RBI's in the win over Eastern Mennonite.

Winchester, Va. (February 23, 2008) – The DeSales University baseball team opened its 2008 season with a 10-3 come-from-behind win over Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.
 
        The Bulldogs (1-0 overall) erased a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the sixth inning and added two runs in the seventh and three more in the ninth to secure the win. Freshman Jeffrey Pinto (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) wasted no time earning his first career win pitching 2.1 innings of relief allowing just one run to earn the victory.
 
        Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth inning, DSU exploded for five runs as they sent 11 men to the plate to take a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) and junior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) each had RBI singles and junior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) had a two-run single in the five-run sixth.
 
        DeSales added two more runs in the seventh that included an RBI double from senior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and the Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the ninth on a two-run single from junior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) and sophomore Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton).
 
        Neiman was the lone player with multiple hits (two), while Matejicka, Bianca and Treat each knocked in two runs in the win. Sophomore Luke Freshwater (Mt. Vernon, OH/Mt. Vernon) and sophomore Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) combined to pitch two scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit and striking out three.

       The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday when they face host Shenandoah University in another non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
