Center Valley, PA, (March 11, 2008) – The DeSales University baseball team concluded its spring trip southwest in San Antonio, TX playing against some tough competition and posting a 1-6 overall record.
DSU started the week with losses to Huston-Tillotson (8-6), Concordia University (17-10) and Southwestern University (11-3), before they defeated Schreiner University (13-8) on Wednesday. After a day off because of rain on Thursday, the Bulldogs suffered a loss to Huston-Tillotson in the rematch (6-0) and dropped both games to Trinity University (9-2 and 21-7) to round out the trip.
Offensively a few players shined including senior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) who batted a team-high .433 on the trip with 13 hits, four doubles and eight RBI's. Sophomore Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) also hit well posting a .370 batting average with 10 hits and seven runs scored. He knocked in six runs and had the lone home run on the week, a three-run shot in the loss to Concordia.
Junior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) batted .333 and had a team-high seven stolen bases, while senior Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) batted .304 with six stolen bases and seven runs scored.
On the mound the Bulldogs pitchers struggled all week with consistency. Sophomore Charles Swenson (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) performed the best posting a 2.57 ERA in seven innings pitched. He struck out eight and walked just two in his seven innings of work. Sophomore Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) earned the lone win of the trip with 3.1 scoreless innings in the win over Schreiner. Opponents batted just .143 off him and he struck out seven batters in five innings of work.
The Bulldogs will look to return to action back home on Saturday, March 15th when they host Neumann College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
