Volleyball Wins Three of Four Matches at Buttermaker Tournament

Allentown, PA (September 6, 2008) – The DeSales University volleyball team improved its record to 5-4 on the young season posting a 3-1 mark at the Buttermaker Volleyball Tournament held at Muhlenberg College on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

DSU split its two matches on Friday, defeating York College, 3-2 (18-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-13), with an impressive comeback after dropping the first two sets of the match. The Bulldogs dropped the second match of the day, falling to Susquehanna University, 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-13), to fall into the bronze bracket on Saturday by virtue of tiebreakers.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs easily defeated Medaille College, 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-3), and had a terrific comeback in the second match of the day, defeating local rival Moravian College for the second time this week, 3-2 (25-15, 25-27, 20-25, 25-21, 18-16). In the win over the Greyhounds, DeSales came back from a 14-10 deficit in the fifth and final set to record the win.

Leading the Bulldogs attack over the weekend were junior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) with a team-high 39 kills. Sophomore Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had 28 kills, 34 digs, and a team-best 14 blocks, freshman Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley Park) had 28 kills (17 vs. Moravian) and eight blocks, and senior Ashley Grube (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) finished with 26 kills and 11 blocks.

Junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) finished with a team-best 80 digs, sophomore Alyssa Poplaski (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) had 56 digs, and senior Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) totaled 111 assists on the weekend.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they begin Freedom Conference play at home when they host Alvernia College beginning at 7:00 pm.
