BOX SCORE

Aston, PA (February 25, 2009) – The DeSales University baseball team opened its 2009 season with a darkness shortened 13-7 win over Neumann College in six innings on Wednesday afternoon in a rare nice day in late February in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Bulldogs scored in all six innings completed and totaled 12 hits on the afternoon as the DSU offense showed very little effects of seeing live pitching for the first time all season. DeSales showed excellent patience at the plate, walking eight times and took advantage with six stolen bases on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs opened up a 4-0 lead with four runs in the first inning before the Knights stormed back with three in the second and three in the third to tie the game at six thru three innings. DSU pushed across five runs in the top of the fourth and added once more in both the fifth and sixth innings, while Neumann scored just once over the final three innings.

Junior Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) had a team-high three hits and scored three times to lead the offensive attack. Junior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades), senior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air), and senior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) each drove in two runs for DSU.

Senior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) had two hits and scored twice, senior Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) collected two hits and scored once and sophomore Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) also had two hits in the win.

Freshman Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned the win, pitching three solid innings of relief allowing just one hit and one unearned run, while striking out two.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they travel to Kean University for another non-conference game beginning at 2:30 pm.
