Matthews Scores in 3-1 Loss at Moravian in Season Opener

Bethlehem, PA, (September 1, 2009) – The DeSales University field hockey team opened its 2009 season with a 3-1 loss at local rival Moravian College in a non-conference game on a beautiful fall day on Tuesday afternoon.

After falling behind 1-0 just 1:57 into the game, junior Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) got DSU on the board tying the game at one with a goal off a feed from freshman Alyssa Knappenberger (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton). The game remained tied at one until just 58 seconds remained in the first half when the Greyhounds struck again to take a 2-1 lead into the half.

In the second half, MC widened its lead to two goals with a marker 9:31 into the second stanza and DeSales never recovered. The game saw just 14 shots, nine by Moravian and five by DeSales. Moravian had 10 penalty corners, while the Bulldogs totaled nine. Freshman Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) finished with four saves for DSU.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, September 5th when they host Frostburg State University in the first home game of the season beginning at 3:00 pm.
