BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (September 13, 2009) – Junior Kelsey Strowhouer (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) converted the clinching stroke lifting the DeSales University field hockey team past Richard Stockton College, 3-2, in a marathon game won in strokes following two sudden death overtime periods on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs earn their first game of the season with the win and improve to 1-4 overall. Richard Stockton falls to 1-5 overall. DSU out-shot RSC, 24-8, and held a 15-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Stockton took a 1-0 lead 8:48 into the game before DeSales answered with two goals at the 16:25 and 30:43 marks of the first half. Junior Amy Pulcini (Easton, PA/Easton) scored her first goal of the year to tie the score at one on a re-directed shot off a pass from sophomore Katie Martin (Bangor, PA/Bangor).

Just over 14 minutes later, DSU took a 2-1 lead when Strowhouer tallied her second marker of the season off an assist from fellow junior Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown). That lead held into the second half and throughout much of the second frame until the Ospreys earned a penalty corner, just their second of the game, with just less than two minutes left.

After a furious scramble in front of the DSU cage, Gabrielle Palermo, got enough on a shot as the ball trickled across the line tying the score at one, forcing overtime.

DSU out-shot Richard Stockton, 6-1, in the first overtime but were never able to score, as they game went into a second 15-minute overtime. Both teams had two shots in the second extra session but were unable to score as the game went to strokes to determine a winner.

Martin started the best-of-5 stroke competition with a goal, as RSC's first attempt went wide. Both team's second attempts were unsuccessful and DSU took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Carla Nunez (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) converted her attempt. Stockton countered, scoring on its third attempt and both teams missed on their fourth attempt. Strowhouer stepped to the line, knowing a goal would win the game as she fired her stroke to the far left, beating the Osprey goaltender just inside the post clinching the win.

RSC's goalie, Debi O'Kane, was terrific in the loss, making 11 saves. Freshman Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) had one save for the Bulldogs.

DSU returns to action on Thursday, September 17th when they host nationally ranked Lebanon Valley College beginning at 4:00 pm.
