BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (September 29, 2009) – Juniors Melissa Gilroy (Shohola, PA/Delaware Valley) and Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) each scored a goal leading the DeSales University field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Arcadia University in a non-conference game on a windy afternoon.

The win is the second straight victory at home as the Bulldogs improve to 3-7 overall, while the Knights fall to 2-6 overall. DSU held a 12-10 advantage in shots, while Arcadia had a 12-10 edge in penalty corners.

Gilroy got the scoring started just 3:57 into the game when she took a pass from Matthews and fired home a shot for her third goal of the season. That lead stood into the half as DSU controlled play, enjoying a 10-1 advantage in shots.

In the second half, Matthews gave DSU its insurance goal 10:21 into the second stanza when she deflected a shot from sophomore Carla Nunez (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) into the cage for her fourth marker of the year.

DSU very nearly had its second straight home shutout but Arcadia was able to get on the board when time had expired with a goal on a penalty corner. Freshman Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) made four saves in the cage.

DeSales returns to action on Thursday, October 1st when they travel cross-town to play Cedar Crest College beginning at 4:00 pm.
